Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) |
Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) is a non-political organization that advises the Federal Government on various issues pertaining to real estate sector in the country. It is a professional association that has ensured a nationwide presence through eight state and territory institute bodies. It conducts study and research on aspects of real estate sector and provides opportunities for new and existing professionals to learn and develop their skills through a wide range of real estate courses. It is also accountable to the public, media and other stakeholders of the industry and help consumers register their complaints against real estate misconducts.
Real Estate Institute of Australia traces its history to the First Conference of Representatives of Real Estate Institutes and Associations held in 1923 in Sydney. The conference was attended by the representatives of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and South Australia. These delegates proposed to the creation of a Federal Council of the Real Estate Institutes and Associations of Australia in order to bring uniformity in the real estate legislation across all states and territories, establish a comprehensive education policy for the training of real estate professionals and to represent the interests of the realty sector and enable members of different states to interchange rights and privileges.
The first president of the Real Estate Institute was Mr. G. T. Lane who was followed by Mr. James Love in 1927. It was under his presidency that the Code of Ethics of the REIA was first formulated, which became a guiding force for the professionals to act and behave vis-à-vis their clients and the public at large. Since its inception in the year 1924, REIA has been driving the real estate sector to new level of success and represented it on a range of realty issues. Its activities are carried out by an efficient management team headed by a CEO. More than 80 percent of the licensed agents, firms and other professionals are represented across the country through eight local bodies, which are
