California Section 8 Housing Application |
California Section 8 Housing Application is made through the medium of a local housing authority. The applications are invited either for a tenant-based voucher program or a project-based public housing program. These section 8 housing programs are funded by HUD at federal level and administered by PHAs at local level. For some counties in the state of California, the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) acts as a local housing authority to administer the section 8 housing assistance program.
The first step towards making a section 8 application in any part of the state is to contact the local HA and get details of the assistance programs that it administers within its jurisdiction. These authorities can even be contacted by property owners to know how they can participate in the program as a section 8 landlord. Tenants can apply to seek rental vouchers that help them pay a reduced rent to their landlords.
How to Apply for Section 8 Housing in California
As it is mentioned earlier, the process of application begins after your meeting with the officials of the local public housing agency. They give you a complete guidance on how to apply for section 8 housing in California. There might be some variation in the eligibility criteria, but the application procedure remains virtually the same for each housing authority in CA.
First of all you are required to fill out the Section 8 housing application form and provide complete details regarding the members of your family, gross annual income, whether you qualify for disabled, veteran or homeless, and records of current and previous landlords and employers. The PHA may also visit your present home to verify the correctness of the information you have provided in the form and also to interview you and any of your family members.
A waiting list containing the names of all successful applicants is prepared by the HA and made available to the public. Preferences may be given to those who cannot afford a rental accommodation or families headed by veterans or disabled. Even after making it to the section 8 housing waiting list, it is not guaranteed that you get immediate help from the authority. Since the resources available at most HAs in California are limited, section 8 tenants have to wait for long in order to get the benefit of the rental assistance program. If your selection is made for a Choice Voucher Program, you can seek a rental accommodation at a privately-owned property provided it meets the housing standard set by the PHA in California.
