| Connecticut is the fourth most densely populated state with an estimated population of about 3.4 million residents living in an area of 5,543 square miles. The state is situated in the New England region of the northeastern US. Its neighborhood consists of Massachusetts to the north, Rhode island to the east and New York to the west and south. It has a long coastline to its west, which has provided the state with a great maritime tradition. Moreover, Connecticut falls in temperate climate zone owing to its nearness with the sea. Bear Mountain, which is situated in Salisbury in the northwest corner, is the highest peak in the state, while the highest point lies on the southern slope of Mount Frissell. The main river is named after the state, i.e. The Connecticut, which flows through the center into Long Island Sound and further vanishes into the Atlantic Ocean. Availability of raw materials has led the development of manufacturing industry and also financial organizations. Increasing prosperity of the people living here has brought Connecticut among the list of states with highest per capita income and human development index.
