Illinois Property Tax

Illinois Property Tax is used to finance most of the services provided by the local government to their residents. Thus, it is the local authorities that levy and collect Property Tax in Illinois and also initiate process to assess the value of real properties for property tax purposes. The Illinois Property Tax Assessment is performed by trained assessors under the guidance provided by the Illinois Department of Revenue (IDOR). As a result, the assessment and the Property Tax Rate calculation conform to the standards set by the Illinois Property Tax Laws. The state laws for issues concerning real estate tax are referred to as Illinois Property Tax Code.

Illinois Property Tax Bill

There are many taxing authorities or taxing districts under the local government, which may include townships, school districts, counties, municipalities, special districts etc. The assessment of real property in Illinois is based on the levies of these taxing authorities. Hence, the amount of your tax bill is determined by the application of various Illinois Property Tax Rates to the assessed value of your real property. Any change following an increase in the value of assessment is communicated to the public through public media or individual notices.
