Illinois Real Estate License Requirements both for brokers and salespersons, in general are 21 years of age and must hold high school diploma or equivalent to that. Along with this both the professionals also have individual licensing requirements. Real estate license in IL is given to leasing agent, salesperson and broker.
Illinois Real Estate Salesperson License: Requirements
Complete the Real Estate Transactions course - 45 classroom hours. In these 45 hours 15 should be on the Article 15 of the License Act, environmental issue and disclosure. The remaining education hours are decided by the Education Advisory Council.
Illinois Real Estate Broker License Requirements
Broker who does not have salesperson license needs to complete the 120 classroom hours in the following courses;
- Real Estate Transaction - 45 classroom hours
- Advanced Principles 2000 - 15 classroom hours
- Contracts and Conveyances - 15 classroom hours
- Brokerage Administration - 15 classroom hours
- Financing - 15 classroom hours
- Property Management - 15 classroom hours
Broker who is already working as licensed real estate salesperson needs to complete 75 hours of education that is considered as mandatory real estate license requirement in Illinois. Exemption in the same is given to the candidates from other states under reciprocity.
Real Estate Continuing Education

Continuing education is also one of the Illinois real estate license requirements for its renewal after the stipulated period of time. 12 hours of CE is must for the salesperson, who has been licensed before April 30, 2007. In this six hours each are given to core and elective courses of real estate. But salesperson, licensed between May 1, 2007 and April 30, 2008 six hours of continuing education and applicant licensed after May 1, 2008 does not have any requirement of continuing education.
IL real estate license requirements include 18 hours of continuing education for brokers who has been licensed before April 30, 2006, twelve hours for applicants licensed between May 1, 2006 and April 30, 2007 and 6 hours of broker Management Course if licensed after May 1, 2007.
Exemption to the IL real estate license requirements
The owners of the real estate and their employees are exempted from Illinois real estate license requirements as per Section 5-20 of the Real Estate License Act. Along with this attorneys confirmed to practice of law, has executed or recorded power of attorney are exempted from the pre-licensing education but they must take the license exam which is again the IL real estate license requirements.
