| Indiana is a US state, which is located in the mid-western region of the country. It borders Michigan to the north, Ohio to the east, Kentucky to the south and Illinois to the west. Lake Michigan is at its northern border while Ohio river defines its borderline with Kentucky on the south. Indiana has 36,418 square miles of land area, which makes it 38th largest in the country. An estimated population of 6,376,792 residents makes the state 15th most populous in the nation. It is ranked 17 in population density with an average of 170 persons living in a square mile of area. It is located on the west of Appalachian Mountains and the highest peak in the state is Hoosier Hill. Indiana became the 19th US state in the year 1816, when it was included in the Union. Indiana consists of many smaller industrial cities, small towns and a few large urban areas. It shows a great diversity in population composition and is particularly known for sports teams and athletic events. The NFL's Indianapolis Colts, the NBA's Indiana Pacers, Champions of Super Bowl XLI and the Indianapolis 500 motor sports race are some of the popular events for which the state is known worldwide.
