|Maine, the easternmost state of the United States of America, is situated at the border of Canada. Located in the New England region of the northeastern US, the state of Maine borders New Hampshire to the southwest and the Atlantic Ocean to he southeast. Towards the northwest border, it touches Canadian province of Quebec and to the northeast, it borders with New Brunswick, another province in Canada. The state is particularly famous for topographical features, such as jagged and rocky coastline, heavily forested mainland and low lying, rolling mountains. It is also famous for seafood cuisine, such as lobsters and clams. Maine is the 39th largest state in the US with a total area of 33,414 square miles, while it ranks 40th in terms of population. According to a 2008 estimate, its population was 1,316,456 with a density of about 41 persons per square mile. The growing population of the state has led its separation from Massachusetts and subsequent inclusion in the Union as the 23rd state under the Missouri Compromise in 1820. Portland is the largest city, while Augusta serves as the capital of the state.
