Mississippi Appraisal Board

Mississippi Appraisal Board (MAB) was constituted in 1990 as a realization of the ruling made by the federal government through the passage of the Financial institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act of 1989. The function of the board was to implement the state as well as the federal law regarding appraisal practices through proper licensure and apt regulation. The basic purpose of the Mississippi Real Estate Appraiser Licensing and Certification Board was to assure general public of safety and fairness when they hire the services of Mississippi appraisers for appraisal related tasks.

Real Estate Appraiser License

In order to achieve its objectives, the Mississippi Appraisal Board offers licenses for real estate appraisal practices in the state to qualified people only. And to judge the quality of an applicant, it has set educational parameters for its different types of licensure. To be more specific, an applicant has two ways to become a Licensed Real Estate Appraiser, each with its own sets of qualification and experience standards.

Real Estate Appraisal Courses

In the first way or the track of the licensure, you are required to complete 90 hours of real estate appraiser specific courses including 15 hours of USPAP approved courses, attain 1000 hours of appraisal experience within a period of 6 months and pass the exam conducted by the board with more than 80% score. The educational qualifications remain the same except the fact that you are given 12 months to complete USPAP courses. There is no experience required in this track, however, the examination will be conducted in the similar fashion.

Similarly, there are different education and experience requirements for other types of licensure, such as Certified Residential Appraisers and Certified General Appraisers. Even after obtaining licenses, you are required to fulfill certain criteria in continuing education and USPAP courses. Licenses are issued for a certain period, which can be renewed upon expiration of the term.
