Mississippi Unclaimed Property

Mississippi Unclaimed Property includes dormant checking accounts, dormant savings accounts, uncashed insurance checks, dividends and utility deposit refunds. The state of Mississippi does not handle contents of safe deposit boxes or real estate. It is the responsibility of the Mississippi State Treasurer to administer unclaimed property that is reported to the State of Mississippi by financial institutions, insurance companies, banks and various other companies.

Mississippi Unclaimed Property Division

The Unclaimed Property Division under the State Treasurer compiles a list of owners of unclaimed property in Mississippi. Along with the types of MS Unclaimed Property and Funds, the list contains the names of owners and, in some cases, their addresses, as have been reported by the holders of the property. The list, which is updated every three years, is made available by the Unclaimed Property Division for public viewing. You can then conduct a search for your lost property, money or funds by yourself or by hiring a third party, usually called a finder.

There are certain laws in Mississippi regarding the contract made by a finder with a claimant. Besides that, the finder cannot charge more than 10% of the recoverable value as a fee for the services they render to find a lost property. Alongside, the checks for MS Unclaimed Funds or Money are sent directly to the claimants and not the finders.

MS Unclaimed Property Search

Alternatively, you can visit the official site of Mississippi State Treasurer to conduct Unclaimed Property Search. The search can be performed using your last name or the name of the company which owes you money. This is a free service and you are not required to pay a fee in order to conduct Mississippi Treasury Unclaimed Property Search. Moreover, the website also provides you information on how to make a claim if you find your name in the list of owners.
