| Nevada is the seventh largest state in the United States with a total geographical area of 110,567 square miles. Located in the western region of the country, the state is bounded by Utah on the east, California on the west, Arizona on the southeast, Oregon on the northwest and Idaho on the northeast. Much of the northern part of the state lies in the Great Basin Desert, while its southern part covers the Mojave Desert. The Humboldt river flows from east to west across the northern part to drain into the Humboldt sink. Many rivers like Walker, Carson and Truckee rivers originate from Sierra Nevada to flow from west to east. The highest mountain is Boundary Peak with a height of 13,140 feet. Colorado River is the lowest point with a depth of 479 feet. Nevada is the 36th state to enter the union in 1864. The state has a large number of silver deposits, which has given it a nickname of “Silver State”. The population figure stands at 2,600,167 according to an estimate in 2008. A major portion of the population is concentrated in the metropolitan areas of Reno and Las Vegas. Las Vegas is the largest city whereas Carson City is the capital. |
