| New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the United States. More than 8.6 million people live in an area of 8,279 square miles. Across all US states, it ranks 47th in total area and 11th in the size of population. The density of the state is 1,134 per square mile. Situated in the Mid-Atlantic regions of the country, it is bounded by New York on the north, Hudson River and the Atlantic River on the east, Delaware on the southwest and Pennsylvania on the west. New Jersey is situated mainly within the metropolitan areas of Philadelphia and New York. It was a hotbed during the American Revolutionary war and many battles were fought here. It was the third state to ratify the US Constitution in 1787. Its proximity to major locations, such as New York City, Baltimore, Washington DC and Boston has caused suburban boom in 1950s. High Point, located at a height of 1,803 feet, is the highest point in the state while the lowest point is the sea level of the Atlantic Ocean. The largest city in the state is Newark and the capital is Trenton. |
