| New Mexico is the fifth largest state in the US with a total area of 121,665 square miles. However, its population is not more than two million residents. This has made it one of the most sparsely states of the country with a population density of only 15 persons per square mile. New Mexico is largely inhabited by Native Americans and Hispanics. Situated in the southwestern region of the United States of America, New Mexico is bounded by Oklahoma to the east and by Texas to the west and south. To the north lies Colorado. The state also shares borderline with Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua to the south. New Mexico has a water area of only about 250 square miles. Precipitation is low with rainfall averaging 15 inches a year. Wheeler Peak is the highest point with a height of 13,161 feet while Red Bluff Reservoir is the deepest area with a depth of 2,842 feet. New Mexico joined the Union in 1912 to become 47th state of the country. English is the prevalent language, however Spanish is spoken by 12 percent of the population. Albuquerque is the largest city and Santa Fe is the capital. |
