| North Carolina is the tenth most populous state in the United States with a population of about 9.2 million residents. Ranked 28th in size, it has a total area of 53,865 square miles. Moreover, its is ranked 15th in population density with as many as 165 persons living in a square mile of area. Situated in the southeastern region the country, the state has a borderline with Georgia and South Carolina to the south, Virginia to the north and Tennessee to the west. Towards east, it has a coastline with the Atlantic Ocean. Humid subtropical is the prevalent climate in North Carolina with western mountainous part falling in subtropical highland climate zone. The state has a number of mountains, the highest among them is Mount Mitchell, which is as high as 6,684 feet. The lowest point, on the other hand, is the sea level in the Atlantic Ocean. North Carolina became the 12th state of the US in 1789 by ratifying the Union Constitution. The state consists of 100 counties with Charlotte and Raleigh being the largest and most important cities. Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina. |
