San Francisco Housing Authority, California (SFHA), which is one of the oldest housing authorities in CA, was established in 1938 with an aim of fulfilling the housing need of low-income families. Housing authority in San Francisco also has the mission to provide 12,000 public housing units and 21,000 section 8 voucher-housing units. Members of Board of Commissioners of SHFA are appointed by the Mayor. It has one Executive Director that is appointed by the Board of Commissioners. Major part of San Francisco Housing Authority ‘s fund is given by the US Department of Housing Authority (HUD) that is close to $200 million.
Rental programs through section 8 voucher programs are carried out in which renter has to pay 30% of their income as rent and this program is also for the low-income group. For this time-to-time waiting list is published.

The San Francisco Housing Authority has also shown success in the Housing Opportunities for People Everywhere (HOPE IV) program. Under this revitalization of the communities that include children facilities, computer learning centers, space for post school programs and community spaces are also undertaken.
Three decades from 1940-70 had seen some of the major developments in the form of communities by SHFA. Contractors of SHFA have employed over 200 residents to revamp and update senior and family housing units. Besides this many residents of San Francisco have also been sent for the programs where they can be plumbers, painters and carpenters.
