| South Carolina is a state located in the southernmost part of the United States. It is bordered by North Carolina to the north and Georgia to the south. It was a part of the Province of Carolina, when it revolted against the British colonial rule along with twelve other colonies during the American Revolution. South Carolina was the eight to ratify the US constitution when it was enacted and became a state of the country in 1788. It was the first to secede from the Union and found the Confederate States of America. South Carolina ranks 40th in area, which is 32,020 square miles whereas it ranks 24th in population with an estimated figure of 4,479,800 residents according to 2008 census. In terms of population density also, it ranks 24th among all states of the USA. The whole of South Carolina consists of geographical areas like coastal zones, coastal plains, sandhills and the piedmont. Coastal Zone consists of three separate areas, namely The Grand Strand, the Barrier islands and Santee River Delta. Piedmont is a hilly region containing that contains numerous mountains, the highest among them is Sassafras with a height of 3,560 feet. Columbia is the largest city and also the capital of the state. |
