State Unclaimed Property

The US Government Unclaimed Property, Money or Funds are collected by each sate of the nation individually. These state based unclaimed property divisions then make attempts to locate the rightful owners by providing a lot of resources to the general public of the state. Advertisements are also placed in newspapers and other media sources.

To find out your lost or forgotten property in the United States, you may conduct search in individual databases of the states as well as the national database, such as MissingMoney.com. Searching through the database is free of charge and you are not required to pay a fee to anybody. However, if you are hiring the services of a third party, usually called a tracer or locator, you may have to pay as per the law of the state. Alternatively, you can also write to the state unclaimed property division to see if your name is there in the list of owners prepared by each state.

You must check with the State Unclaimed Property Offices every few years to see if your name is there in the list of owners. Moreover, there is no time limit to claim a property and the abandoned property is always available for claiming. The procedure to claim an abandoned property is quite simple and the government websites of your state will guide you through out the process. You are required to submit a claim form along with documents supporting your claim to the property.
