| Vermont is the second least populated state of the United States after Wyoming. It has an estimated population of 621,270 residents as per the statistics of 2008, which has given it the 49th position among all states of the US. The total area is 9,620 square miles with a population density of 67.2 per square mile. Vermont is located in the New England region of the northeastern US and is bounded by Massachusetts on the south, New York on the west, New Hampshire on the east and the Canadian province of Quebec on the north. Lake Champlain is spread over half the portion of the western border while the Green Mountains run north to south. Mount Mansfield is the tallest mountain with a height of 4,393 feet and the lowest point is at Lake Champlain, 95 feet below the sea level. Vermont became the 14th state of the United States of America in 1791. Moreover, it was the first state outside the original thirteen colonies to join the Union. Noted for its landscaping views and dairy products, Vermont is a leader in the production of maple syrup all across the US. Burlington is the largest city and Montpelier is the capital of the state. |
