| Virginia is the 12th largest state of the United States in population with more than seven million residents living in an area of 42,774 square miles. The state is sometimes referred to as "Mother of Presidents", because as many as eight U.S. presidents were born here. The state is quite rich in flora and fauna with the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay shaping its geographical structure. The highest mountain in the state is Mount Rogers, which has a height of 5,729 feet above sea level. Virginia is located on the Atlantic Coast of the southern US with Maryland and the District of Columbia forming its northern and eastern boundaries. Kentucky is situated to its west, North Carolina and Tennessee to the south and West Virginia to the north and west. Agriculture is prevalent in the Shenandoah Valley, while Northern Virginia is known for federal agencies, such as The Pentagon. Military bases are found in Hampton Roads. The most populous subdivision is Fairfax County while Virginia Beach is the most populous city in the state. The capital of the commonwealth of Virginia is Richmond. |
