Virginia Real Estate License

Virginia Real Estate License and licensing needs are regulated by the Real Estate Board that is under the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR).

Real estate salesperson to get VA real estate license, needs 18 years of age and 60 hours of real estate courses that are approved by the Real Estate Board. Along with this state as well as national level of the exam must also be cleared by the candidate who is applying for the real estate license in Virginia.

Virginia Real Estate License Requirements

VA real estate licence for brokers has certain specific requirements that include 18 years of age, 180 classroom hours and completion of real estate exam. Every broker needs to complete 60 hours of courses in broker-specific course and 45 hours of broker related course. Brokers who are trying for the Virgina real estate license must also show the proof of experience that include 36 months of working as salesperson in last 48 months. All the applicant can apply for the real estate license within a year of clearing the examination.

License Renewal Courses

Virgina real estate license renewal needs certain specific numbers of continuing courses. Licenses that are expiring before July 1, 2008 needs 16 hours of continuing education that are divided as:
  • Fair Housing - 2 Hours
  • Ethic and Standards of Conduct - 1 Hour
  • Legal Updates and Emerging Trends - 1 Hour
  • Real Estate Agency - 1 Hour
  • Real Estate Contracts - 1 Hour
  • Rest of the 8 hours are utilized in the real estate related courses.
Broker whose VA real estate license is expiring after 1st July 2008 needs to complete 24 hours of courses. Salesperson whose Virgina real license renewal has already taken place once needs 16 hours of continuing education for further renewals. The requirements of education are also applicable if one wants to change the inactive status to active. Now the license renewal can also be done online. For this purpose the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation gives the Personal Identification Number (PIN) that is used for the payment of fees. This PIN is expires after single renewal. To pay online fee candidate needs, PIN, Virginia real estate license number, Tax ID and Credit Card information.

Virginia Real Estate License Reciprocity

Virgina has reciprocity with other states but all the candidates will have to clear the state level exam before applying for the real estate license. Salespersons are required to submit the proof of experience.

They must work for at least 40 hours per week for 12 months in the last 36 months and must have completed 60 hours of real estate courses. Brokers also need 40 hours of during 36 months within the period of 48 months.
