The state has an area of 71,342 square miles making it the 18th largest in the country. It is ranked 25th in population density with 88.6 per square mile. In terms of median income, the state has a rank of 13 with $53,515 per capita. Located in the Pacific Northwestern region of the country, Washington is bounded by Oregon on the south, Idaho on the east and Canadian Province of British Columbia on the north. To the west lies the Pacific Ocean. The State of Washington joined the Union in 1889 as the 42nd state after ceding from the earlier Washington territory. Washington is usually referred to as "The State of Washington" in order to distinguish it from Washington D.C, the capital of the United States. Mount Rainier is the highest point with a height of 14,410 feet above the sea level while the lowest point is at the Pacific Ocean.
