Located in the Pacific Northwestern region of the country, Washington is bounded by Oregon on the south, Idaho on the east and Canadian Province of British Columbia on the north. To the west lies the Pacific Ocean. The State of Washington joined the Union in 1889 as the 42nd state after ceding from the earlier Washington territory. Washington is usually referred to as "The State of Washington" in order to distinguish it from Washington D.C, the capital of the United States. Mount Rainier is the highest point with a height of 14,410 feet above the sea level while the lowest point is at the Pacific Ocean.
