| West Virginia is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States. It joined the Union as a separate state in 1863 after breaking away from Virginia during the American Civil War. It was the 35th state to ratify the US Constitution. West Virginia was one of the two states came into existence during American Civil War, the other being Nevada, which was separated from Utah territory to become a separate state. West Virgina has an expanse of 24,230 square miles making it 41st largest in the US. In terms of population, it ranks 37th with more than 1.8 million residents living across the state at a density of 75.1 per square mile. West Virginia is bounded by Kentucky on the southwest, Pennsylvania and Maryland on the northeast, Virginia on the southeast and Ohio on the northwest. Spruce Knob is the highest point with a height of 4,863 feet while Harpers Ferry is the lowest at 240 feet. Charleston is the capital and the largest city of West Virginia. |
