| Wyoming is the least populated state in the United States. In a total area of 97,818 square miles, the state has an estimated population of just 532,668 residents giving it the last rank across all states of the US. The state is the tenth largest by size with a length of 380 miles and a width of 280 miles. As a result, the population density is only 5.4 per square mile, which gives it a rank of 49 in the list of most densely populated states in the country. Located in the northwestern region of the country, the state is chiefly dominated by the mountain ranges of the Rocky Mountain and a high altitude prairie region in the easternmost section. Gannett Peak is the highest point and Belle Fourche River is the lowest. Wyoming is bounded by Montana on the north, Colorado on the south, Nebraska and South Dakota on the east, Idaho on the west and Utah on the southwest. There are 23 counties in the state of Wyoming. Cheyenne is the capital as well as the most populous city in the state. |
